How did I get into teaching?

15 years ago in 2009, when I was a member of an open access printmaking studio called Spike Print Studio in Bristol, I was also in the middle of doing my MA in Printmaking at the University of the West of England, when the studio director were looking for a new tutor and suggested that I run a Lino Printing evening weekly course

To be honest the thought of it absolutely terrified me, but during my time on the MA, my confidence had really grown and I felt able to except the offer and to give it a go, thinking that if it didn’t work out then at least I gave it a shot

15 years later and I’m still teaching Lino Printing. I stayed for a few years at Spike Print Studio, then I did a few classes at the Drawing School, which is situated in the RWA (Royal Academy of the West of England) and then in 2016 I joined the team at Bristol Folk House where I currently teach regular weekly classes and one/two day workshops

More recently I have begun offering private sessions from my studio space, as one to ones and for couples

I would highly recommend Kerry Day as a teacher and artist. I took a weekly lino course a couple of years ago and the lessons were structured yet laid back allowing us to independently get stuck in, trying various suggested techniques while still having the support of Kerry when we needed it. She taught lino but went further in offering guidance on new techniques, paper choice and colour. It was a really great experience and I think Kerry being such a friendly and nice being only made the sessions more enjoyable

What is Lino Printing?

You may be wondering what Lino Printing is. Lino printing is a traditional relief printmaking method, and is also known as lino cutting. When lino printing you cut a design into a block of linoleum, which was commonly used as a flooring material, a thin layer of ink is applied on the remaining raised surface with a roller/brayer and printed onto either paper using a Japanese Baren or a printing press.

A talented artist and patient, encouraging and knowledgeable teacher, her workshops are not to be missed.

What will you learn during my weekly Lino Printing Classes?

All of my classes are aimed at complete beginners, however I do have students come along with mixed abilities wishing to learn more advance techniques and wishing to improve their printmaking skills. If this is you then you are very welcome to come along too.

I always start the first class as a introduction to the course and this will be the most structured of the classes, showing you examples of Lino prints, how to use the tools and how to print your Lino. Then it becomes more 1:1, depending on your abilities, experience and what you would like to do during the course.

So what can you learn?

  • Learn how to use the tools safely and what type of cutting marks they can make

  • Learn about types of Lino and printmaking papers

  • How to transfer your designs on to your Lino

  • Learn about printing inks and how to ink up your Lino

  • Learn how to use the printing press

  • Learn how to print without a press by using hand printing techniques called burnishing

  • Learn how to register your Lino (line it up while printing)

  • Learn various Lino printing methods, such as single colour prints, how to introduce colour into your work, multiple block Lino printing and the reduction print method. Don’t worry you’re not expected to learn them all. You may want to stick with just one or try lots of things. It’s your creative time so it’s totally up to you what you do with it. I’m just here to guide and give a helping hand

  • Plus I usually add in a few tips along the way as and when needed

I’ve been on a few lino printing courses over the years, including doing it throughout school. Kerry’s classes cover the most techniques by far yet they are still very laidback and relaxing. She gives her students free reign over what they create and manages to get fabulous results through advice and demos, without taking students work and doing it for them. I’ve done a few of Kerry’s courses and highly recommend them
